Two Ways to Get Involved
1. Fundraising Ideas
Teachers: If you are interested in participating in this fundraising project, please register to receive an info pack: E-mail: or Call: Stephanie Chausse ~ 455-8119
- Feature students’ essays, artwork, skits & videos at an Afghan cultural night; charge a small admission.
- Print & sell chapbooks of students’ essays and artwork about The Kite Runner.
- Read-a-Thon: Ask students to gather pledges for each page of The Kite Runner they read; students can read aloud in groups or independently.
- Create a chain of kite-shaped cards with the names of each student or teacher who donates money. Hang the kites in a public space.
- Have students design kite-shaped collages about The Kite Runner for display. Put a can in front of each and have students vote for their favorites by dropping coins into the cans. The winning artist will receive two tickets to the May breakfast and the money goes to Kohak School.
- Sell donated pens & pencils during lunch.
- Ask clubs that run fundraisers to become involved & donate money.

2. Pictures Speak a Thousand Words: A Cultural Exchange with Afghanistan
Challenge some creative students to document life at your Rhode Island high school. Include photographs of classrooms, the grounds, students in action, clubs, sports teams, performances – anything you’d like to share. Arrange the pictures to tell a story without using any words. Create a scrapbook, collage, posters. . .
Reading Across RI will send the photo documentaries to Kohak Primary School in Kandahar. Drawings and photos from the Afghan students will be shared with all schools that participate!
